Burnt Zombie Awards 2009

It’s been a hectic last few weeks here at BurnAllZombies: those of you who know us will know why it’s been a bit quiet on the updates, but with 2010 just around the corner, updates will be coming at you so fast, you won’t know what’s hit you.

New Year’s Eve is as good a time as any to look back over some of the best of what 2009 had to over. On that note, we bring you the inaugural Burnt Zombie Awards, a run-down of the finest movies, games, music, TV and comics had to offer this year. Of course, if you disagree, we can discuss below. It’s not as if we’ll send the zombies around if we don’t agree with you…

Take That (And Party…If You Want)

Even if you weren’t a teenage girl in the early nineties, with Take That posters on your walls, you now like Take That; if you say you don’t, you’re lying. But it’s okay, there’s no shame in liking Take That, a band whose career has covered two decades, spawned some pretty successful careers (and then there’s Robbie Williams too) and feature a man often regarded as one of the best songwriters of today. With the release of SingStar Take That on the PS2 and PS3, there’s a tough decision ahead of you: do you admit to knowing all the words and being able to sing the songs pitch-perfect, or do you embarrass yourself in front of all your friends when they realise you can’t?

Is It Really Better Late Than Never?

It’s the second guest post in the last couple of days, and this one is right up there on the headlines, as I take a look at what the industry could, and should, do differently to help combat piracy.

With the internet more rife with pirates than a Johnny Depp movie, we all know illegal downloading exists, and Irish ISPs and their reactions to sites like The Pirate Bay have been hitting the headlines over the last few weeks. The music industry in particular are doing their best to clamp down on piracy and illegal downloads, but let’s be realistic: internet piracy will probably never be completely eliminated, at least not until the ultimate cause gets nipped in the bud. So is piracy the result of consumer greed, or in some ways, have the entertainment industry been too slow to move into the digital age and created a situation of their own delayed action?

Playing With Daisies

Muse aren’t the only band with an upcoming album, and they’re not the only band for whome the tracklist for the new album has been released. Daisy is the fourth album from New Jersey outfit Brand New, following up on the lengthy-titled (and beautiful) The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me.

Viva La Resistance

As the Twitter phenomenon grows from social networking into a news source (we’ll leave the word “reliable” out there for fear of legal action), it seems that bands, actors, directors and writers are leaking information on their new products through the site, sometimes intentionally, and other times wholly by accident.

Right Round, Baby, Right Round

Brody Dalle has always been a princess of punk, though her position in the line of succession has been disputed. Alternately disparaged as a poor man’s Courtney Love, others hail her as everything Love could have been, and a rock at the heart of the alternative/punk music scene. Currently married to Josh Homme of Queens Of The Stone Age, divorced from Tim Armstrong of Rancid and front-woman of The Distillers for three albums, there’s no doubt surrounding Dalle’s credentials. It’s been a long time coming, but finally, Dalle releases her new album, this time working under the name of Spinnerette.

Dalle has described Spinnerette not as a band, but her working with “whichever musicians I want to work with at the time,” and the personnel on this record have just as much pedigree as Dalle herself. She is joined by Tony Bevilacqua (formerly of The Distillers), Jack Irons (from Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Pearl Jam) and, most notably, Alain Johannes, who has previously worked with Queens Of The Stone Age and Chris Cornell and who shares some of the song-writing credits here.

I Tried Making Music And This Is What Happened

The title says it all, really: I’ve been really neglecting my musical love this last while, and in the ongoing process of making Genius playlists on my iPod and listening to music far too loud, I’ve wanted to remix stuff and mash it all togehter.

Be nice to me, this is my first ever go at doing something like this, and the software is a total headache, but I decided I’d mash up Britney Spears’ “Womanizer” with Oomph!’s “Ego” and it sounds a little something like this (file’s on sendspace since I can’t find anywhere else that’ll let me play it properly.)

And yeah, I’m well aware that 8 year olds are capable of doing better, but I tried!

The Kinda Leak That Doesn’t Need A Plumber

I’ve gone off Marilyn Manson a lot recently: “Eat Me, Drink Me” wasn’t a bad album, but it certainly wasn’t as good as “Mechanical Animals” or “The Golden Age Of Grotesque” in my opinion. (In case you can’t guess from the name-check, they’d be my favourite Manson albums, and hey, who doesn’t love glam-influenced metal-pop vaudeville-core?

A couple of new songs have been leaked, anyway, and I’m thinking I might like new song “Arma-god-damn-mother-fucking-geddon” in a “Golden Age” type way. I’m still not sure, and it’s apparently a basic mix,  so I’ll have to wait for the album proper to drop, but until then, ch-ch-ch-check it out.
